Who Is Behind MyPhone2Go Anyway? Hello World!
March 2007: my wife and I had just arrived in Canada. We knew no one here, and certainly knew nothing about life here. We simply came with our dreams and a desire to belong, but not much else.
Our priorities were finding a place to live, food, opening a bank account, warm clothes, and of course, getting internet and a cell phone.
I have travelled to many places. I have lived in the US, Honduras, and Ecuador, and have visited half a dozen countries throughout Europe and South America. Upon arriving in Canada, I expected cellular service to be more expensive than it was in Europe, but I was definitely NOT prepared.
I have two words for it: Red Tape! It was expensive, and to say it was inaccessible to us newcomers is an understatement. It turned out that to obtain a regular postpaid account we needed to have a credit history, proof of address, a credit card, and two pieces of ID. We somehow managed to cut our way through this red tape only to be shocked by huge monthly bills with proration, advanced charges, unclear usage costs, admin and additional fees… it was a nightmare! Still, our other option would have been to pay per use which meant buying a phone outright, and paying for every single click… postpaid was the lesser of two evils. And hey, Blackberry was hot, and the iPhone had just come out!
Things have improved since those days, now with sweeping changes in legislation for wireless services, but getting good service in Canada without breaking the bank continues to be difficult…particularly for unwitting travellers. So that’s why we founded MyPhone2Go: to make it easier for travellers to stay connected while they visit this beautiful country. In the end, our aim is to reduce your phone bill, whether you are an international traveller visiting Canada or a Canadian travelling abroad.
But there’s more to MyPhone2Go than meets the eye. We love this country, it’s our home, our children were born here and our family couldn’t be happier. It is also here that we came to know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. For us this means we no longer live for ourselves, but strive to help the community that we are a part of. In Guelph Ontario specifically, MyPhone2Go plans to partner with local organizations that reach out to various vulnerable groups with the mission of providing direct support to those in need, as well as fostering community spaces for developing these ongoing relationships.
